In spite of the hype surrounding the movie and NASA trying to quell fears about impending doom, there remains an increasing number of people who believe that date will be a fateful one for mankind.

The major reason people look to 2012 is due to the belief that an ancient time cycle worked out by the Mayans – known for their art, mathematics, and prophecies, and the inventors of the only known written language of pre-Columbian America, comes to an end in that year. There are some, however, that state that there is no such time cycle, and furthermore, that the Mayans did not have a prophecy about a catastrophic end of the world.

Is there an answer to the question – “When will the world end?” Can we even know if the world will end at all, and if so, how? It turns out that there are some very compelling reasons to believe that, in fact, the world is coming to an end. But there’s an even more important question to consider. Not long ago some friends came to visit us. When I asked if they needed directions, they assured me they would be fine since they had a GPS unit in their car. I was impressed and even wondered if we should get a GPS unit too, since I have a tendency to get lost easily. Anyway, we planned for their arrival, and since they were going to make it in time for supper, we were ready. As we sat at the table, we soon noticed headlights out across the meadow along a dirt road from which it is impossible to get to our home. We joked that perhaps they had gotten lost. A while later when they arrived and we sat down to eat, they shared with us how their GPS had led them out to a beautiful meadow and of course we all laughed. Apparently, even GPS units can be wrong.

This theory comes from two scientists. While the article states that the earth could be blown away by an asteroid or a nearby exploding star, the “new” theory proposed here is related to the sun. The two scientists cited in the article believe the sun is getting brighter – in fact they suggest it is now 30% brighter than when it started. The idea is that the sun will get brighter and the earth will grow hotter and hotter until finally even the oceans will be evaporated. Ultimately, they believe the sun will expand and engulf the earth, before shrinking again, and finally disappearing from the view of the rest of the universe.

While this certainly doesn’t sound like a good way to go, the two gentlemen referred to in the article assure us that it won’t likely happen for another half a billion years. Meanwhile, other more pressing problems loom large – posing a serious threat in our lifetime.
